Travel cards compared: ATM withdrawal fees abroad
A withdrawal abroad can be charged three times over. A good card removes part of the bill, not all of it. Here is which part, and with which cards.
The three fees on a withdrawal abroad
1. The ATM operator's feeCharged by the local bank that owns the ATM. No card avoids it: only your choice of ATM matters. This is what our country pages list.
2. Your own bank's feesA fee per withdrawal and a markup on the exchange rate. Example: 2% of every withdrawal outside the euro area with a Visa Classic card at the French bank Hello bank!. This is the part a suitable card removes or reduces.
3. The conversion offered by the ATMThe ATM offers to charge you "in your own currency": this is dynamic currency conversion (DCC), at a poor rate. Always decline it and choose the local currency.

Official fee schedules checked on October 3, 2026, for a customer living in France: amounts may differ depending on your country of residence. Banks change them regularly: check the schedule before opening an account. The ATM operator's fee applies in every case.
Three habits that matter more than the card
- Before you leave, find the country's fee-free ATMs: our country pages list them. Countries ›
- Withdraw less often, in larger amounts: a fixed fee weighs less on a large withdrawal.
- Always choose the local currency when the ATM or card terminal offers your own.
